This photo was taken on impulse. It was about 9:00 at night after dinner at a restaurant near Soi Som Khit, and I noticed this young woman working her food stand.

She was beautiful, but tired. What you can't see in the photograph is the little girl standing beside her, no more than four or five, watching patiently while her mother tended the food cart. Her small voice could be heard over the sizzling of the grilling meat and the whirring of passing taxis and buses.

I was so close to the two of them for an instant, but then suddenly a whole world away.
