My portable library is shrinking...I'm going to have to find some English bookstores in Bangkok very soon. Right now I'm flipping through Mark Twain on Travel, a compilation of excerpts from the writer's voyages across the world edited by Terry Mort. Twain is a brilliant writer, that's a secret to no one, but much of his writings from his travels are riddled with naivete and callousness. I find it refreshing and deliberately amusing.
Some quotes I extracted to add to my favorites list:
"There are humorous things in the world; among them the white man's notion that he is less savage than the other savages."
"Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness."
