Avallone in his design, 'Chair 1'
UPenn Design Center hosted an exhibit last night for Design Philadelphia, which included the work of friend and up and coming Industrial Designer Rocco Avallone.
The exhibit included a range of designs and artwork from students and professional designers. A Barbie Doll duster, owl pendants, refurbished fiberglass chairs, stenciled wooden shelves, the evolution of the bicycle basket, a chandelier made out of gold faucet fixtures, and the newest version of Septa's public seating were some of the featured designs.
Amongst those, Avallone's boldly basic 'Chair 1' in lime green and textured oak stood out as a refreshing refrain from the standard. Also being featured was Design1138's 'e-Lounge', a signature creation of streamlined electronics bases in fresh colors that can hold any device.
In between oohing and aahing at all of the creativity, my roommate and I snuck upstairs to see what the UPenn design studios looked like. Turns out they aren't much different than Philly U's. Cold coffee, littered desks, and a few weary-eyed late-nighters were the only things going on up there.
